Apple Has Plenty of ‘TIME’ for Great Gadgets

TIME magazine has listed 50 Top 10 lists on their web site this year - 50! Surely an Apple product made it into at least one of these lists, right? Of course, we wouldn’t have posted this unless there was. Silly question.

Time’s Top 10 Gadgets (for 2010) listed not one, but four, Apple products in this category. The iPad took top honors (of course!), the newly-revamped 11-in. MacBook Air took third place, the iPhone 4 took sixth place and the new Apple TV took seventh (with a much improved form factor, capacity and functions). Untethered iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Coming Before Christmas, Will Support New Apple TV

Great news for jailbreakers this morning: the Dev-Team has been busy working on an untethered solution for the current iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak (which requires to boot the device using Redsn0w) and it should be released before Christmas. Last night, @musclenerd tweeted a video showing the untethered method running on a jailbroken iPod Touch 4th gen which relies on the kernel from iOS 4.2 beta 3.

According to @musclenerd, the current implementation doesn’t use any new exploit, but @comex is working on a better system that will perhaps be implemented in the final release. Read more

Walt Mossberg reviews the new Apple TV:

But it has some significant downsides. The most important of these is a very limited selection of Internet video sources. If you want a set-top box that allows you to watch a wide range of video from the Web, Apple TV isn’t it.

Apple TV is now essentially a modestly priced adapter that streams video, audio and photos to your HDTV from three main sources: your own computers, Apple’s iTunes service plus a few other online sources, and content on your portable Apple devices using AirPlay.

He also says AirPlay works great.

aTV Flash Available: Supercharge Your Apple TV Now

aTV Flash, the first alternative browser and multimedia center for the new Apple TV, is out and available for purchase. We have covered aTV Flash in the past week, and we saw the app it’s capable of bringing several new features to the 2nd gen Apple TV, such as HTML5 playback via a custom browser or weather information.

Hacked Apple TV Plays HTML5 Video via Web Browser

Of all the cool mods and hacks for Apple TV 2nd gen and AirPlay we’ve been covering in the past weeks, this one’s for Cupertino’s little black box has to be the most promising one.

Two weeks ago a video of aTV Flash, developed by Fire Core, made the rounds as it appeared like full-featured web browsing with Last.fm integration was coming to jailbroken Apple TVs. Development on the suite has been proceeding steadily, and a few days ago a new video of the tweak in action surfaced showing support for HTML5 video inside Fire Core’s browser – all played smoothly by the Apple TV.

As wrote by the developers, some parts of the app like Last.fm integration and the installer are ready for beta, but the release of iOS 4.1 for Apple TV and support for additional video codecs are turning out to be more difficult tasks to accomplish. Secrets Of Apple TV 4.1

We note up front that there is some confusion as to what the actual version of the Apple TV update is, since the version numbers are not entirely consistent. The second-generation Apple TV was released as “Software Version” 4.0 but actually ran “OS Build Version” 4.1 (8M89). The OS build version can be viewed by going into the “About” screen on the Apple TV and pressing the center button on the remote which will cycle through Software Version, Software Build and OS Build Version.

The latest update follows this same numbering convention, with the Software Version appearing as 4.1 and the OS Build Version appearing as 4.2 (8C150). It’s also worth noting that iOS 4.2 released for the iPad, iPhone and iPod touch is build 8C148.

Apple TV 4.1 Update Addresses FreeType and PNG Vulnerabilities

Multiple vulnerabilities exist in FreeType, the most serious of which may lead to arbitrary code execution when processing a maliciously crafted font. These issues are addressed by updating FreeType to version 2.4.2.

With a support document posted a few hours ago, Apple confirmed that the latest 4.1 update for the 2nd gen Apple TV also includes fixes for vulnerabilities found in FreeType and the libpng library. Both of them could have lead to arbitrary code execution, much like this summer’s JailbreakMe security hole.

iOS 4.1 For Apple TV 2nd Gen Now Available

Together with iOS 4.2.1 for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, Apple also released an update to the 2nd gen Apple TV. Firmware seems to be iOS 4.2, build 8C150.

Here’s the direct link to download it.

This update enables AirPlay for video functionality, as announced this morning, although it’s not clear whether Apple managed to include a fix for color issues on Sony and Philips TVs or not.

Update: we’re getting reports from users about the Apple TV software update claiming an iOS 4.1 update is available, although the direct link version clearly says it’s iOS 4.2. Curious.

Update #2: We can confirm the built-in updater tool will install iOS 4.1 on the Apple TV. Guess someone messed up with version naming for direct download at Cupertino.

Apple TV 4.1 Update Coming Today, Too

Together with the release of iOS 4.2 for iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, today at approximately 10 AM PST Apple will also release the long awaited 4.1 for the second generation Apple TV, Macworld reports.

The 4.1 update introduces AirPlay for video support: users will be able to stream video from any iOS device or Mac running iTunes 10 to an Apple TV on a local network. AirPlay is a feature exclusive to iOS 4.2, so it makes sense for Apple to roll out the update together with iOS 4.2 later today. Read more
