The “FaceTime in the Middle East” saga is undergoing another major development today: according to website iRamadah (Google Translation, via 9to5) Apple’s video calling system is working perfectly fine, only with an iPod Touch 4th generation. We have previously reported about the weird removal of all FaceTime images and mentions from Apple’s eastern websites, then Apple itself posted a supported document regarding the absence of FaceTime in certain Middle East countries due to problems with the carriers. FaceTime Does Work In The Middle East, With The iPod Touch
3G Unrestrictor Updated for iOS 4.1, Jailbreakers Rejoice | Cydia Store
3G Unrestrictor, the popular tweak available in Cydia to trick apps to think they’re on Wifi while you’re using 3G, was updated earlier today to include full support for iOS 4.1. This means that if you’ve jailbroken your device with Geohot’s limera1n or Greenpo1son, you’ll be basically able to have FaceTime calls on 3G again.
I missed FaceTime on 3G, a lot. Italy’s Tre network is pretty powerful (especially in my town) and I was once able to have a FaceTime call on 3G with Robert Scoble, who was in Boulder, Colorado. The quality was great. Now, can enjoy the fixes of iOS 4.1 and have FaceTime on 3G back.
The tweak comes at $3.99 in the Cydia Store. Must-have. Read more
FaceBreak Update Brings FaceTime on 3G Back to iOS 4.1 | Cydia Store
FaceBreak is a tweak available in Cydia (which just went back up, although some “connection timeout” issues are still there) at $1.49 that allows you to have FaceTime calls on 3G. It’s very simple and focused on FaceTime, unlike other apps such as My3G or 3G Unrestrictor that let you modify other settings and options for other 3rd party apps installed on your device.
The latest 1.1.5 update brings iOS 4.1 support, bug fixes, better battery handling. Available through BigBoss’ repo at $1.49. Also, check out our continually updating list of Cydia apps working on iOS 4.1 here.
Apple Confirms: No FaceTime In Middle East. Why?
A few weeks ago we reported that Apple removed every FaceTime mention and graphics from its Saudi Arabia website. It could have been a cosmetic tweak, website refresh - or it could have been the sign that Apple was having difficulties with FaceTime and Middle Eastern carriers.
With a support document available here (as noticed by SaudiMac), Apple just confirmed that the Middle East won’t get the magical FaceTime. Read more
FaceNow: Handy FaceTime Shortcuts
I haven’t used FaceTime that much until now, mainly because none of my friends managed to find an iPhone 4 with 3 Italia. Last night, though, I found out that two of them bought one earlier this week (“finally”, they said) and 2 hours ago I got a call from my town’s 3 store about the availability of the 32GB model for my girlfriend. This means that starting tomorrow I’ll use FaceTime a lot. An awful lot.
Thanks to a free app called “FaceNow”, the FaceTime experience will be a lot faster and easier to setup. Read more
More European FaceTime Commercials
Last night we reported that some major Italian TV channels started airing the first iPhone 4 commercials, all of them focused on FaceTime. It turns out that the commercials are the same across all Europe, UK and Spain included. Check out the videos here if you missed them last night.
3Italia has posted two new ads on their official Youtube channel, and I have to say they’re a lot better than the first two. They’re emotional, human, simple and effective. We’ve embedded them after the break.
About Time: Italian FaceTime Commercials
A few hours ago some major Italian TV channels started airing the first, official FaceTime commercials for the iPhone 4. Smart move from Apple: Sunday is football’s day in Italy, and Apple picked sport-based channels like Sky to air the commercials. Even though the iPhone 4 came out in late July and they could have aired the ads before, this is a clever day choice.
As for the videos, it’s the same background music of the US commercial, but the subjects are different. Check them out after the break, we like them. Hat tip to iSpazio for finding the videos on Youtube.
Saudi Arabia Not Getting FaceTime? Is Apple’s Encryption To Blame?
Here’s a very strage thing TUAW is reporting: as found on this SaudiMac Facebook thread, it appears that Apple has changed the graphics on Saudi Arabia’s Apple.com website and many other Middle East countries. Actually, they removed all the FaceTime graphics and mentions. Read more
More Images of iPod touch 4 Frame Front Facing Camera
This morning we got a look at the rear of the new iPod touch, and now MacRumors has an eerily similar LCD display and bezel that looks like what was shown off a month ago. Bearing the Apple (c) 2010 branding and a recent build date of April 29th, we just might be ruining whatever surprise Steve Jobs has in store for us. Although to be fair, there’s always one more thing. Check out the new panels after the break.
