Woz Learned About iPhone 4 Antenna Issues The Hard Way

Whether iOS 4.1 fixes the iPhone 4 antenna issues or not (it did the trick for me), it’s very interesting to read the opinions of well-known industry personalities about it.

But Steve Wozniak is more than a personality - heck, he’s the guy who co-founded Apple with Jobs. He must know something about Apple stuff, right? It turns out he experienced reception problems, too, and he learned about them the hard way. He touched the spot and everything froze.

Read an excerpt of his interview with Dutch journalist Henk Van Ess after the break.

Actually, iOS 4.1 Fixes the Death Grip

Last night a bunch of blogs reported that the latest iOS 4.1 beta didn’t fix the “Death Grip” problems with the iPhone 4 antenna. We linked to those reports because I had the chance to test the new firmware in a low-signal area and, apparently, the Death Grip was still there.

Today I woke up early and decided to go out for some field testing with my iPhone 4 running iOS 4.1 Beta 1. I took a walk in strong-signal areas (very strong-signal - Viterbo is covered pretty well by 3G and HSPA) and, surprisingly enough, I wasn’t able to reproduce the grip issue.

What happened with iOS 4.1?

iOS 4.1: Now with Full Bluetooth AVRCP Support

Among the little fixes and new features introduced last night in iOS 4.1 Beta 1, some 9to5mac readers noticed a very important one: full Bluetooth playback control support for AVRCP-compatible devices.

AVRCP is a technology that allows Bluetooth handsets and car dashboards to take full control over the music playback of another device. Before iOS 4.1, an iPhone paired via Bluetooth only allowed volume control. Now it seems like you can play, pause, skip, forward and back.

Nice addition.

iOS 4.0.1 Coming Today?

This is curious: iPhoneHellas is claiming that Apple will release iOS 4.0.1 later today. They cite “a reliable source”, and as MacRumors notices the site was right about firmware releases in the past.

The 4.0.1 update should only contain bug fixes and the signal indicator formula. If this is true, expect it to drop in 6 hours.

iOS 4 Now with Direct iTunes Access - DJ Apps Developers Rejoice

DJ apps seem to do pretty good in the App Store, but from today on, they’ll just keep getting better. One of the biggest complaints of DJ apps devs was the lack of direct access to the music library to edit songs already synced with iTunes. You had to upload another song to an app-specific library, fire up the app and find that song you uploaded.

Now, it looks like you can just pick up a song from iPod.app and start scratching.
