We’ve reported about the issues publishers had to face when selling iPad subscriptions in their magazines and newspaper apps before. Apparently, either Steve Jobs wants to control the market by imposing rules because, you know, he’s just a bad guy, or publishers simply went against Apple’s own SDK, which doesn’t allow developers to implement external subscription models in their apps. The problem is, if the iPad is supposed to change the landscape of digital publishing you would expect Apple to change its rules a little bit and let News Corp. and Time, Inc. do as they want. Didn’t happen. Read more

iPad Gives Special Needs Kids a Boost
Before she got an iPad at age two, Caleigh Gray couldn’t respond to yes-or-no questions. Now Caleigh, who has been diagnosed with cerebral palsy, uses a $190 software application that speaks the words associated with pictures she touches on Apple Inc.’s device.
“We’re not having to fight to prove to people that she is a smart little girl anymore, because it’s there once they see her using the iPad,” said Caleigh’s mother, Holly Gray, who said her daughter can use the tablet to identify colors or ask to go outside.
Incredible.
A White iPad 2 Concept
In a few months we’ll be able to put our hands on a new iPad. Whether it’s going to be a 7-inch model, sold in double 10 / 7-inch flavor or simply have a new camera on board - it’s going to be all new. And when it’s about “all new” products from Apple, it’s never too soon to start thinking about them.
The following concept video, spotted by iSpazio, shows us a white version of the “iPad 2” with a front-facing camera and a flat back, much like the iPhone 4. I don’t know if that kind of surface would be suitable for the tablet, but sure the concept is damn sexy. Take a look at the video after the break. Read more
Clever Interactive Ads for iPad [Video]
Even though there’s no iAd program for the iPad yet (remember, it requires iOS 4), agencies are struggling to find the best way for their clients to showcase products on the tablet. And with its mainstream success, I bet clients are crying to have great ads on the iPad.
The following video, originally posted by Peter Kafka over at All Things D, showcases three cool ads for the iPad created by the MediaLets ad startup. In the video you can see a FedEx ad for the Newsweek app; a Visa ad that lets you interact with the various e-commerce possibilities offered by Visa (looks stunning); a Toyota Prius ad that allows users to draw images into the video.
Check out the video below. It gives you a taste of the things to come once iAd for iPad launches later this year. Read more
The New York Times Pulls Editor’s Choice, Releases Free Full-Content App
We knew that the NYTimes’ Editor’s Choice app for iPad was only an interesting experiment released for the iPad, we didn’t know the official, full-content NYTimes iPad would be released this week. Surprisingly enough, last night the NYTimes pulled Editor’s Choice (which has been downloaded more than 650,000 times) and released after a few hours a free version of “NYTimes for iPad”, available in the App Store here. 150 Million iOS Devices Next Year→
150 Million iOS Devices Next Year
Horace Dediu:
What seems to be happening is that Apple is pulling out all the stops and going for unrestricted iPad distribution. This may also foreshadow unrestricted iPhone distribution next year. It may also portend a CDMA iPad (or at least an LTE version) next year.
If it happens all estimates for next year need to be revised sharply. I had been expecting 100% growth for the iPad and 50% growth for the iPhone. These might need to be increased to 150% and 100%.
The consequence could be that total iOS devices sold could top 150 million for calendar 2011.
And none of them runs Flash.
Finally, TED Releases Official iPad App
Good news, TED aficionados: there’s an official TED iPad application (developed by Matt Drance, who also runs AppleOutsider) out in the App Store, and it’s free. The application allows you to watch videos in low and high res depending on your connection, organize playlists, explore what TED has to offer.
You can sort videos by recency and popularity, filter by tags or themes, discover new videos thanks to the related talks feature. I’ve just downloaded the app and it works really well. It’s also elegant, minimal and polished. It almost feels like TED videos were meant to be consumed on the iPad in the first place.
From the TED blog:
The iPad presents a thrilling new platform for delivering a TED experience,” said June Cohen, Executive Producer of TED Media. “We rethought the user experience to take advantage of the portability, the touchscreen and the focused media time people have when they travel or settle in for an evening. We think TED fans will particularly love the “Inspire me” button, which creates a custom playlist to fill the exact amount of time they have free.
TED for iPad is free and available here. Make sure to read the interview with the developer Matt Drance here, and check out the screenshots below. Read more
iPad in AT&T and Verizon Stores October 28th
Now that the iPad is being sold at Amazon, Target, Walmart and Sam’s Club, Verizon and AT&T are two more (and big ones at that!) to add to the list of the all-time fastest selling gadget. It makes sense that AT&T is going to sell the iPad in its retail stores since they already carry the iPhone line; Verizon could be making room in their showroom for the iPad because rumors are saying that a Verizon iPhone may be here very soon.
Intel CEO: “Apple Did A Wonderful Job With The iPad, But We’ll Win”
Rumor has it the iPad is the fastest selling gadget in history. As Kanye would say: the best selling gizmo of all time. What’s curious is that PC manufacturers used to ditch the tablet category and make fun of Apple and its iPad back in January, but after a few months of blockbuster sales they had to revise their position and rush to get some tablets out in the market. As it stands right now, the Samsung Galaxy Tab is coming out in a few weeks (though hundreds of review units are somehow circulating amongst tech blogs) and lots of other models have been announced but they’re still nowhere to be seen.
