A New Meaning to the word ‘iLife’

Coach Eric Cooper Sr. never thought he would need to save one of his player’s lives, nor did he think an iPhone app would assist him in doing so.

The LA Times reported that Xavier Jones, a player on Coach Cooper’s basketball team, collapsed during practice after his heart stopped beating from hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart muscle becomes hardened, making it more difficult for it to pump blood. Coach Cooper and an assistant coach rushed out to see what the problem was. After checking and not detecting a heartbeat, Cooper pulled out his iPhone and launched Phone Aid, which gave them detailed instructions on how to perform CPR to get his heart started again. Modded SNES Controller and Nintendo 64 Become iPhone and iPad Docks

In what could be described as a pretty surprising turn of events, Nintendo now considers Apple the biggest threat to its mobile gaming dominance. Etsy user Geekunique, however, wants to bring some love back between Cupertino and Kyoto and find a way to let old Nintendo consoles and modern iOS devices play nice together. Geekunique, in fact, modded an old SNES controller and a Nintendo 64 to become iPhone and iPad docks, respectively.

It seems pretty easy to cut a hole in the controller and place an iPhone dock connector in there but hey – you can avoid the trouble and buy these things now at Etsy. If you think you really need them, be quick: I guess they’ll be sold out pretty soon.

MacStories Preview: Screens, New VNC Client for iPhone and iPad

When the iPad came out in April, there was a category of apps I was looking forward to trying on the tablet: VNC clients. Those apps that allow you to connect to your Mac using OS X default sharing capabilities, enabling you to mirror your computer’s screen on an external device – such as the iPad, indeed. I got my iPad, and soon after that I installed iTeleport on it.

I’ve been using iTeleport on a daily basis since then to check on my computer when using the iPad in another room – usually the living room –  to change songs in iTunes, quickly move files to Dropbox and stuff like that. iTeleport is a fast and stable application, and it also comes with a feature that lets you connect over 3G routing the computer through a Google Account. Using a computer remotely over 3G isn’t the best experience you can get, but it works fairly well to start downloads and trigger actions on the go.

A few weeks ago Luc Vandal from Edovia contacted me and asked me if I’d be interested in trying a new VNC client they had been working on for months. I said yes, and now the app is basically ready for App Store submission. I’m running a final version of the app, the same that Edovia will submit to the App Store.

Apple Now Featuring “Holiday Apps & Games” In The App Store Homepage

With Christmas just around the corner, Apple decided it was about time to start featuring holiday-related apps and games in the App Store. After all, they’ve been doing this for music and movies in the iTunes Store for a few weeks now, promoting apps sounded like the next most obvious step. So here they are, grouped together in a nice section Apple is featuring with a simple and elegant in the iPhone and iPad App Store homepages.

This is a direct link to the new section. As of right now, apps such as Angry Birds Seasons, Christmas Sudoku HD and Talking Santa for iPad are included.

We’re pretty sure more will come in the next weeks, and we think it’s a very nice way to put apps parents and kids will find interesting in this time of the year under Apple’s spotlight.

White iPhone Spotted In A Bar

Following in the footsteps of Gizmodo, we have our own bar stories to share with the general public. Or at least some spy shots of Apple’s unicorn-status white iPhone 4. While there aren’t any scandalous stories about sex and espionage (I wish there was), we do have some sexy finger photos after the break.

There’s A New Minecraft Clone In The App Store

Fans of popular indie sandbox game for Mac and PC Minecraft have been asking for a native iOS porting for months now. While it looks like they won’t be getting an official iPhone or iPad version anytime soon, clones approved by Apple are here to help.

After a brief appearance of “Minecrafted for iPhone” two weeks ago, there’s a new app in the App Store called “Eden - World Builder” which looks and behaves a lot like the original Minecraft. The app is available now here, and it’s priced at $4.99. Although the app’s name doesn’t carry the Minecraft brand, the description on iTunes says:

Explore a vast pristine world of infinite possibility. Build your own personal Eden. Eden brings the creative block building genre, pioneered by games like Minecraft, Infiniminer, and Blockland, to the touch screen.

Whatever. From what I can see in the app, though, looks like you can break any block with 1 hit, and I haven’t seen monsters around. Perhaps I just need to play more.
