iOS 4.2 on iPhone 3G: Much Better [Video]

The guys over at TiPB thought it was about time to take a second look at the 2008 iPhone 3G and see how it would perform on the upcoming new version of iOS, the iOS 4.2 Apple is rumored to be releasing sometime this week. They installed the GM build on the iPhone 3G, and as you can see in the video Apple’s engineers really did everything they could to optimize the OS for the slower device (it’s got a Samsung ARM 412 MHz processor and 128MB of RAM).

Scrolling seems smooth and fast, typing is ok, there are a couple of slowdowns when trying to pinch and zoom on webpages but no big deal. When iOS 4.0 came out in June iPhone 3G users were left out in the cold with a terribly slow OS that didn’t run exactly “well” on their devices. I saw one and trust me, it was slow as hell

iOS 4.1 made things slightly better, but it looks like 4.2 it’s going to be the ultimate optimized operating system for 3G. And it wouldn’t be surprised if it was the last one, too.

Angry Birds. Stop Motion. Massive Hit. [Video]

First came the iPhone game. Then the iPad version. Worldwide success. Then more levels. A Halloween edition. Even more success. Repeat.

Some people made costumes.

Then they announced the plush toys.

Now, there’s a video of Angry Birds in stop motion. Hours of work put into recreating a 30 seconds battle with paper and a camera. Realized by photographer and filmmaker @gregorycortez, this guy took the effort to snap a photo of every single frame you see on the video so that everything looks like it’s moving. iPads Become Light Source for Professional Photoshoot

We’ve heard a lot of stories about the iPad being used in many original and innovative ways. So many of them, actually, that it’s not easy to remember all the photos, videos and stories detailing the iPad as a revolutionary device used for something else than it was originally meant to – a portable computer.

Today we take the iPad-related stories a step further with this video where photographer and filmmaker Jesse Rosten (hey, he’s the same guy behind iPad + Velcro, the video that even got featured by Apple) used an array of 9 iPads as a light source for a model photoshoot. With a light background at full brightness, the iPads managed to generate enough light to let Jesse shoot the great pictures you can see in the video below. Read more

Newsday’s New iPad Ad Doesn’t Really Impress

This is what happens when Apple legal forces you to take a genius commercial down and release a more “normal” one. In case you missed Newsday’s story, they once released a clever commercial in which a man killed a fly using an iPad instead of a regular newspaper. The iPad, of course, was shattered.

That ad was aimed at proving that tablets are anything like old media, and you shouldn’t think of them in that way. Like I said, a clever advertisement that went viral. But Apple didn’t like and Newsday was forced to take the ad down (copies can still be found on Youtube, though).

Now Newsday is coming back with a new ad, but it doesn’t really impress much. There are some trippy animations here and there, as RazorianFly also notices, but the style and cleverness of the first attempt is far, far away.

The 58-inch Multitouch Table For iPhone Is Real [Video]

We covered the Table Connect for iPhone (a 58-inch surface that mirrors your iPhone screen) a few days ago, and now the developers posted a video of the “device” in action: as you can see in the video above, the table requires you to start an app on the iPhone (likely available through jailbreak) and plug in the cable. Wifi is not supported at this point.

The two guys in the video seem to access the Springboard just fine, they swipe between pages and launch the Photos app. It doesn’t look like a fake, as many readers claimed. The iPhone also seems to be able to output UI elements on that bigger screen just fine.

The Table Connect is still in development, so we’ll keep you up to date with the project.

Update: some readers have pointed out that the guy in the video holds the power button down when firing up the app required to output the iPhone screen.

Reggie Watts, An iPhone App, Lots Of Win [Video]

So here’s the thing: I bought some music apps for iPhone, thinking that maybe I could accomplish something good. I mean, have you seen what Atomic Tom came up with? Or all those other iPerformers on Youtube? And DJ Rana June? I suck at music apps, plain and simple. Yet I keep buying them hoping that maybe someday the musician in me will find his way out to be great with a touch screen. Whatever.

Reggie Watts, famous stand-up comedian /musician / life genius, proved once again that if you want to do something great with a music app, you need to have what it takes. While he was interviewed on Sirius XM radio, he told the host and the people in the studio he forgot his stuff and he pulled out his iPhone. He fired up Everyday Looper and started improvising.
